Identifying & Leveraging Your Strengths at Work

Regularly utilizing your strengths in the workplace can lead to feeling more authentic, happy, and fulfilled. This all leads to higher life and career satisfaction, and less burnout. Follow the steps below to identify and leverage your strengths at work!

1. Journal

Your strengths are often already visible in your life. You just need to pay attention to them.

Use the following journal prompts:

  • What tasks give me energy instead of draining me?

  • What feels natural or easy for me that others find challenging?

  • What do people consistently come to me for help with?

  • When have I felt most proud, effective, or fulfilled?

Note: Do not dismiss what comes naturally to you. Many of us overlook our strongest qualities because they feel easy; but, often, the things that come naturally to us are exactly what make us unique. Remember that just because something is easy for you doesn't mean it's easy for everyone.

2. Ask trusted people

Ask a trusted colleague, friend, or mentor: "What do you think my greatest strengths are?"

Sometimes, other people see our strengths more clearly than we do.

3. Use online resources

4. Communicate Your Strengths

Allow others to know your strengths so that they can come to you with opportunities.

Examples:

  • "I really enjoy stakeholder engagement."

  • "I love organizing teams around a shared goal."

  • "I'm at my best when I'm solving complex technical problems."

5. Help Others Recognize Their Strengths

As leaders, peers, mentors, and teammates, we can have a profound impact on someone's confidence and career. When you see a strength in someone, name it.

Examples:

  • "You're great at bringing people together."

  • "You ask really thoughtful questions."

  • "You explain complex ideas clearly."

  • "People trust you."

Sometimes a single comment can change how someone sees themselves.
